DIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO AND WESTERN AMERICA: September 15, 2006
The Male Choir of St John of Shanghai and San Francisco Issues a Recording of Church Music

The Male Choir of St John of Shanghai and San Francisco is one of several choirs of the Cathedral of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" in San Francisco. It was established in 1996 by Deacon Vadim Gan. The choir dispersed for a few years in light of Deacon Vadim's departure for Australia in 1999. In December, 2005, a group of singers under the direction of Nicholas Kotar, most of whom sing in the kliros choir at the Cathedral, became the core of the reestablished male choir. Today the choir consists of 20 singers, including clergymen and laymen of the Diocese of San Francisco and Western America. The choir's repertoire includes church music of the Russian Orthodox Church of the 17 th through 20 th centuries. St John's Male Choir sang at the opening ceremonies of the IV All-Diaspora Council.
