WESTERN EUROPEAN DIOCESE: July 30, 2018
St Barbara Church in Vevey, Switzerland, is under renovation

On Thursday, July 26, 2018, with the blessing of the hierarchy, Protopriest Emilian Pocinoc, Secretary of the Western European Diocese of the Russian Church Abroad, visited the Church of Great Martyr Barbara in the town of Vevey, Switzerland, where a capital renovation is under way. Fr Emilian met with Protodeacon Mikhail Verna and others leading the effort, who showed him the work in progress. Fr Emilian passed on the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York, Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, and His Grace Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, Administrator of the diocese, along with their good wishes for the success of the renovation.

Approaching is the celebration of the 140th anniversary of the consecration of the church, on October 14, 2018, which spurred the renovation project: the facade is being steam-cleaned and the cupola re-gilded. The first phase should be concluded by early October.

The church is protected as a landmark. Work is being done under the auspices and control of the State Department for the Preservation of Landmarks, the Society of the Russian Orthodox Church of St Barbara in Vevey, the architect Olga Korikova and Fr Mikhail Verna.

Donations are being accepted to assist the renovation:
