The Union of Descendants of the Russians of Gallipoli to Host an Exhibit on the Heroes of the White Movement

On September 15, 2017, the Russian House in Belgrade, Serbia, will be home to an exhibit titled “God is With Us! May Russia Be Reborn!” The event is dedicated to the heroes of the White Movement and their faithful service to Russia in their Homeland and abroad.

The show, organized by the Union of Descendants of the Russians of Gallipoli, will tell the story of the Russians whom fate threw to the barren Turkish peninsula of Gallipoli, where they continued to faithfully serve their Fatherland, staunchly defend their ideals and traditions.

The exhibition is being held in the capital of Serbia for good reason: that nation welcomed their Russian brothers and sisters in exile. In 1921, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croatians and Slovenians harbored over 40,000 Russian refugees, making Serbia one of the largest centers of the Russian diaspora. Russians were granted equal rights with natives, and Serbian King Alexander Karageorgevic issued orders not only to provide housing, food and medical attention to the exiles, but “to preserve the Russian soul for its people.”

Symbolically, the opening of the show takes place in the Russian House built by the Russians of Gallipoli, specifically by the renowned Russian engineer and architect, Colonel Vasily Feodorovich Baumgarten. The edifice, named after Tsar Nicholas II, became the spiritual, cultural and social hearth of local Russian life. It contained a chapel, a Russian-Serbian high school for boys and girls, and an elementary school. The premises also included a public library, Russian academic institute, an open Russian theater, Russian musical society, a “Sokol” sports organization and a museum devoted to Emperor Nicholas II.

The event is supported by Rusky Tsar Studio and the Foundation of the White Movement Under the Auspices of the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God "of the Sign” and will continue through September 17.
