SREMSKI KARLOVCI: May 16, 2017
The Serbian Center of the Russian Diaspora Hosts an Exhibit on the Royal Passion-Bearers

On April 30-May 14, 2017, the city of Sremski Karlovci hosted an exhibit titled “Meeting the Russian Tsar. The Romanovs and Royal Service,” dedicated to the family of Tsar-Martyr Nicholas II.

The Sremski Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church organized the show, the locale of which is important, as the city was one of the main centers of Russian refugees between the World Wars. The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and the headquarters of General Wrangel were both situated in Sremski Karlovci.

It is in the Serbian Patriarchal Residence where the Russian Synod would hold it meetings that the exhibition is now displayed.

The opening coincided with a cultural event, including singing by several choirs, which sang the Russian Imperial hymn “God Save the Tsar” and the Serbian hymn “God of Truth.”

His Grace Bishop Vasilije of Sremsk opened the exhibition, noting the enormous role that the Russian refugees, especially the clergy and monastics, played in the spiritual renewal of the Serbian Church and what was then the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. It is difficult to overstate the spiritual and cultural contributions the Russian emigration made within Serbian society in the first half of the 20th century.

Vladyka also emphasized that the people of Sremski Karlovci esteem the Russian Tsar and welcome this exhibition in his honor.

In the first days after the opening, the show drew crowds of people, becoming one of the city’s main events during this Paschal season.

A catalog was published by one of its curators, Professor Predrag Miodrag, which covers the exhibition itself and the biography of the Royal Martyrs. After its closing, the exhibition will be moved to the city of Sid, Serbia.
