On the feast day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, July 21, 2016, His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York participated in Divine Liturgy celebrated by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. On this day in 1579, the Kazan Icon appeared in the city of Kazan. This year, Patriarch Kirill officiated at Divine Liturgy at Annunciation (Blagoveshchensky) Cathedral in Moscow’s Kremlin. That morning, before Liturgy, a painted copy of the Kazan Icon, a gift from the Vatican in 2005, was brought to the Kazan Mother of God Monastery. Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation at the Volga Federal Region, Mr MV Babich, and President of the Republic of Tatarstan RN Minnikhanov, waited to greet the delegation at the doors of the church. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill venerated the relics of St Gury, Archbishop of Kazan and Sviyazhsk, which are interred in the cathedral. His Holiness was joined in the service by a host of hierarchs including Metropolitan Hilarion, His Eminence Archbishop Mark of Berlin and Germany and other clergymen. Before Holy Communion, the Kryashen ensemble “Bermyanchek” sang prayers in their language under the direction of People’s Artist of Tatarstan EV Kashapova. The compositions were arranged for the Kryashen language by SV Smolensky and GM Makarov. Abbot Evfimy (Moiseev), Prorector of Kazan Theological Seminary, delivered a sermon.
