NEW YORK: May 8, 2015
A Regular Session of the Synod of Bishop is Held in New York

On May 5 - 6, 2015, a regular session of the Synod of Bishops, chaired by His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, was held. Participating in this meeting were His Eminence Archbishop Mark of Berlin and Germany; His Eminence Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco and Western America; His Eminence Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal and Canada; His Grace Bishop John of Caracas and South America; His Grace Bishop Peter of Cleveland and His Grace Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan.

The archpastors first heard a report by Archbishop Mark on the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem of the Church Abroad, followed by a report by Archbishop Gabriel, who heads the finances of the Synod, Treasurer Deacon Michael Wengrin and members of the auditing committee headed by Deacon George Temidis.

After reviewing the report of Archbishop Mark, the Synod decreed that conferences are to be held from now on in the convents of the Holy Land with the participation of the Chief of the Mission, Archimandrite Roman (Krassovsky), the convent’s abbesses and prioresses and other individuals for the purpose of deliberating on administrative matters for the monasteries.

It was decided that the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God "of the Sign”--at the invitation of His Eminence Metropolitan German of Kursk and Ryl’sk, His Eminence Metropolitan Kirill of Ekaterinburg and Verkhotursk, and His Eminence Metropolitan Nikon of Ufa and Sterlitamak--will be brought to their metropoliates. By recommendation of Bishop Nicholas, the members of a delegation of the Russian Church abroad was decided upon, which will accompany the main holy icon of the Russian diaspora. Nicholas Ohotin, Communications Director of the Synod of Bishops, then reported on various administrative matters on Wednesday.

The archpastors also decided to prayerfully mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Metropolitan Anastassy (Gribanovsky) of blessed memory, and the 30th anniversary of the death of Metropolitan Philaret of blessed memory, on the feast day of the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God "of the Sign.” Clergymen will be instructed to commemorate these hierarchs during Divine Liturgy in their churches on May 9/22 (Metropolitan Anastassy) and November 8/21 (Metropolitan Philaret).

Having examined the rite of divine services in honor of St Jonah of Hankow, the Synod of Bishop decreed to instruct EV Perekrestov to head a special committee to make necessary amendments.

The celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the death of St Vladimir will be held at St Vladimir Memorial Church in Jackson, NJ, in July; in Holy Virgin Protection Memorial Church in Ottawa, Canada, in October, and in the Diocese of Mid-America, which will hold two celebrations in its northern and southern territories. These celebrations will coincide with conferences (information will be provided in the near future).

Having discussed the report of Protopriest Alexander Golubov of Saint Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral in New York, who spoke on the regulations and guiding principles of St Vladimir Society in New Jersey, the Synod confirmed them, invoking divine blessing upon the society's members on this important 1000th anniversary of the death of Holy Prince Vladimir.

At the proposal of Archbishop Kyrill, the Synod gave its blessing for the establishment of a monastery dedicated to St Silouan of Mount Athos not far from San Francisco.

The Archbishops, having heard intercessions from the ruling bishops, decreed awards to be granted to a series of clergymen and laity.

The meeting and ended with the singing of “Shine, Shine” before the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God.

The next meeting of the Synod will be held on September 8, 2015.
