GALLIPOLI: January 17, 2008
The Cornerstone Is Laid For a Memorial For Russians Killed in Gallipoli in the 1920's

On January 10, 2008, the cornerstone was ceremoniously laid down in Gallipoli (Gelibolu), Turkey, for the a memorial to the Russian military and civilian refugees who found temporary, and for some, permanent, sanctuary here, from 1920-23. Through a diplomatic agreement between the Russian Federation and Turkey, the memorial will be rebuilt in the same form that it took since the 1920s but destroyed later in an earthquake. His Grace Bishop Michael of Geneva and Western Europe participated in this festive event as a member of the Organizing Committee.
