DIOCESE OF EASTERN AMERICA AND NEW YORK: July 16, 2007
Bishop Gabriel visits Camp NORR

His Grace Bishop Gabriel of Manhattan, Vicar of the Eastern American Diocese, visited the children's summer camp NORR (Association of Russian Explorers Outside of Russia) in the Catskill Mountains on July 11 and 12, 2007.

Despite his busy schedule and Synod responsibilities, Vladyka Gabriel comes to camp each July, (this is the eighth consecutive year) taking part in camp life, visiting with the instructors and counselors, and spending time with the youth. This year NORR is operating its 41st summer camp in the Catskill Mountains of the State of New York.

On the eve of the feast of the Holy Leaders of the Apostles Peter and Paul, Vladyka Gabriel officiated at the all-night vigil in the camp chapel, concelebrated by Priest Alexandre Antchoutine along with Deacon Dimitri Temidis.

On the feast day, the meeting of the Bishop occurred at 7:45 AM with the participation of the entire camp. Vladyka Gabriel served Divine Liturgy, which was concelebrated by the aforementioned clergy. During his sermon, Vladyka Gabriel spoke to the faithful about SS Peter and Paul, and that with the apostles as an example, we should not be ashamed of our faith, never hiding the fact that we are Orthodox Christians. Vladyka spoke about a gentleman who simply crossed himself prior to a meal in a restaurant in a small South American town. A youth noticed the unusual (for a Catholic) sign of the cross and approached the stranger with questions. A discussion ensued, which was so interesting and impressive to the young man, that over time, he became Orthodox, and eventually, went to study at the seminary in Jordanville.

After lunch, Vladyka made the campers very happy by treating everyone to ice cream. Camp NORR is deeply appreciative of the time and attention that Bishop Gabriel devotes to us each year.
